Day 04 - Winton to Boulia [365 km]

The evening of the second day we were taken for a beer/wine sunset in Winton. It was a fitting end to our two nights in Winton with a dinner at a popular pub to look forward to.

We started just before 8.00 am on our drive to Boulia. The first stop was at the sign showing the length of the Outback Highway from Winton in Queensland to Laverton in Western Australia, running right across the Northern Territory. This is the road we will take. Of course it's time for a group photograph (everybody in the bus is here except Barb who took the photograph)

Around here the country was grasslands with the road straight and sometimes narrow.

We stopped for a coffee at a really interesting 'Hotel' in the middle of nowhere; the Middleton Hotel. It was open when we arrived and the lady served us coffee and a cake she had in the kitchen. Her husband works the farm and she runs the hotel and is the teacher for their two little kids. The money she gets for coffee goes straight into fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

From the Middleton Hotel it was a straight drive to Boulia. We stopped at the Burke River Bridge, just before the town of Boulia, to look at some murals. The river itself was quite attractive (to me, anyway)

We were staying at The Australian Hotel.

Livestock on the footpath.

After lunch Marg and I walked the length of the Main Street (didn't take long) and visited a couple of shops. One of the more interesting landmarks was the Red Stump.

Dinner at the hotel and an early start for a long long trip to Alice Springs tomorrow.
